Support From LWRA For Tour of Sebring Rolls Flat

Sebring Tour
August 31, 2008
Since about 1992, the LWRA has loaned support in the form of radio-controlled 'safety checkpoints' to the cycling event known as "Tour Of Sebring" which took place on Sunday August 31.
But not this year. We let them down like a flat tire on a long stretch of deserted highway. In fact some parts of the tour are actually just that! There were zero LWRA members to help out this time.

Notice of help, or to stay tuned went out on this web site weeks prior to get folks ready. A week before the tour, LWRA officers were notified by the tour SAG officials for help.

With Hurricane Gustav bringing fast moving rain bands and wind over the County today, this hazard conditions for people on bicycles with very thin performance tires. And who knows how many took a wrong turn this year without the LWRA's help to navigate certain parts of the course, and to monitor dangerous intersections of highways.

At the very least, one would figure with the increasing number of local Hams who claim to have a strong interest in public safety functions, taking all those preparation courses, that there would be a number of volunteers eager for some field work to try out their portable emergency operations gear in a needful situation as the Tour of Sebring, looking after hundreds of riders.

Quick note from LWRA newsletter editor Rick WB9IJW Note: As of September '08, the news letter is going out by E-Mail and not by paper, unless you do not have a computer/internet.

Still Looking For Content to Place on the LWRA Web Site
The webmaster is still in need of news to place on the lwra.org web site. This style of web site was designed to have active content revolving through it frequently, so as to keep everyone interested in coming back, as opposed to the ho-hum 'static' web page that just says who we are ,what the dues are, and where the meetings are, with little else that never changes like so may other site out there.

This is pretty much the 'last call' in begging for a continuous flow of content to keep this site going / interesting as it was intended. It costs the web master (not the LWRA ) $60 per year to to keep the domain name and needed web space for the existing content which continues to grow over time. But with no input about what is going on in the the LWRA or it's members, the $60 might get the budget axe come December 21st. CORRECTION: expiration/renewal is October 21st.

There have already been some pages that have been eliminated like the items for sale, trade or want, page. One would figure that would have been a big hit to list your wares and clean out the shack. But as the years ticked on, that had not worked at hoped.

Content is easy to come up with when you are an active ham or member. Even if it only has some small tie with Amateur Radio, share it! It only takes a bit of your time and also helps others to get to know your interests better and thus make new friends to propel your own interests. This is an all around good thing.

LWRA:
  • Report on what happened at the last meeting?

  • What positive actions have been accomplished lately?

  • What is the Association sure to be doing in the near future?

Members:
  • What is that thing you are working on the bench?

  • Share tips on Ham related stuff you learned along the way.

  • Hamshack bloopers are always good. We've all been there!

  • Ham related blasts from the past.

  • Usually just one or two good paragraphs will be fine. As you notice, articles here are generally not that long, just informative.

  • Including at least one picture is always a big plus when composing an article. Be sure to include a short caption that tells the reader what they're looking at.

  • A number of hams to write short monthly columns each on different ham topics would be great!

Repeater system troubles- What's being done about it?
September 1, 2008
Snap, crackle, pop, chop-chop-chop, shhhhhhhhhh, click-BEEP! (then silence)

When the repeater has 'fits' which is all too often since it went into operation in April 2008, that's what you get. The repeater eats your signal up and spits out nothing when it's at it's worst.

The Repeater system is unreliable in this state.

Revealing pictures with annotations (July 25th article)
After 5 month of this, is anyone really doing anything about it or will the ham community just have to live with it after all the investment it took to get it back on the air? Time to truly confront this topic don't you think? Official meetings resume September 11th at 7PM . That might be the place to start.

2008 LWRA Picnic / Field Day - Article Terminated
After 2 months of asking/begging if any one would like to offer further reviews or pictures of the Field Day/picnic, and receiving no input (lack of interest?), the continuation of this article has been terminated. ( BTW, Thanks Don and Dorshane for the awesome poster, great spirit!)
